The Harlingen Outreach Center hosted a meeting with staff from Harlingen Family Dentistry, the KB Foundation of Texas, and Harlingen High School JROTC instructor, Tony Gonzales and his cadets to present the Better, Brighter, Me Summer Youth Competition which is based on The Way to Happiness Program.
Three precepts from the Way to Happiness book: Take Care of Yourself, Safeguard & Improve Your Environment, and Set a Good Example will be used to enable the children participating to develop their thinking and writing skills. The children will be given an assignment which relates to the precept that asks them to see where the need is and what they can do to improve upon it. Harlingen High School JROTC cadets will serve as mentors guiding the children with their projects. The purpose of the program is to enable children to have a sense of purpose, to be acknowledged in a positive manner, and to come to understand that they have the power to make a positive impact on their surroundings.
The program kicked off June 18, 2012, and will conclude with the award ceremony on August 7, 2012. A panel of community leaders will judge the projects as the children present their oral reports along with their visuals.
